Engorgement

Breast engorgement may be the most common problem of new and breastfeeding mothers. It affects all women who choose to formula feed, and most breastfeeding mothers at one time or another. Every time your baby misses a feeding, you will probably start to feel uncomfortably full—a situation known as breast engorgement.

Breast engorgement is most common in the early days of breastfeeding, during the days following delivery when your milk supply first comes in. You will notice that your breasts have become suddenly swollen because of the increased blood flow that signals the start of milk production. The severity of breast engorgement varies from woman to woman. Some only feel mild discomfort, while others experience very swollen, painful and lumpy breasts. If you are breastfeeding, this situation can make it difficult for the baby to latch on.

The best cure for breast engorgement is frequent nursing (every 1-3 hours), warm and cool compresses, and breast massage. Whether you prefer a hot or cold compress is an individual decision. Many doctors recommend heat, but some women have a higher level of comfort from a cool touch. Unless you are trying to dry up your milk production, choose whatever makes you most comfortable.

The Thermalform® Breast Gel Pack is wonderful for this condition because it distributes heat or cold evenly across the breast. The gel pack’s contoured shape fits perfectly, with ample room to avoid the most sensitive part of your breast, the nipple.

Mastitis (Breast Infection)

Mastitis is a common breastfeeding problem that strikes 30 percent of nursing mothers. This bacterial infection is most common during the first three months of breastfeeding and often follows an episode of plugged milk ducts or cracked nipples. Mastitis presents symptoms very similar to the flu, and is distinguished by a red, tender spot on the breast.
If you develop mastitis, it is critical to contact your doctor treat it as soon as possible. Treatment usually includes plenty of rest, frequent nursing, and a warm compress.

Thermalform®’s perfectly-contoured Breast Gel Pack offers outstanding relief for healing. Apply it to the breast to provide long-lasting heat to the affected area.

Plugged Milk Ducts

Plugged milk ducts occur when the ducts that lead from the milk-making cells to the nipple become plugged. This creates a tender lump under the areola. Redness from the lump towards the wall of the chest may also be associated with this condition. The pain may be on again/off again and there may be no other symptoms. If left untreated, a plugged milk duct can easily become infected leading to mastitis, infection, or a breast abscess.

Some suggestions to relieve plugged milk ducts include:

  • Apply a warm Thermalform® Breast Gel Pack to the affected breast prior to feeding.
  • Nurse the baby on the breast with the plugged duct. Draining the breast milk will prevent infection, and the baby's sucking may dislodge the plug.
  • Change the baby's position on the breast so that all of the milk ducts are drained. You can also point the baby towards the affected area.
  • Massage the affected area by kneading your breast gently from the top of the breast down over the plugged duct toward the nipple.
